Micah is, in a word, conscientious. If he were any more considerate, he’d never get around to taking care of himself. As it is, he’s already prone to letting his own needs go untended in favour of the needs of other people. He really just does his best to be unobtrusive and not be a bother. Unfortunately, this means that those who care about him have to work twice as hard just to get inside that silly little head of his. It seems as though Rose especially has trouble with his steadfast commitment to staying out of the way, because she’s the only one whose seen even a little ways past his surface. Since she knows that everything is actually usually not fine, she doesn’t always let him get away with being private about his problems. And believe me, he has problems.

He’s been in therapy for three years in an attempt to correct a long-term eating disorder, to little avail. Though he’s managed to get a free pass from society (young men like that have such fast metabolisms!), those who really examine his situation can see that he’s not living the healthiest lifestyle. His main issue is his self-esteem, but he has a fair number of vices that come along with that, and they don’t exactly help his situation. He’s been a pretty heavy smoker for a while (which Rose isn’t exactly thrilled about), and he’s been known to watch telly or clean house when he should be sleeping. He cooks quite a lot for other people, but if he’s honest, he does it more for show than for a love of food. Though, don’t be mistaken, he does love food. Despite his distaste for doing anything that may effect his weight in what he perceives to be a negative manner, he almost always has a sweet on hand. In some ways, his insatiable sweet tooth could be listed more as a vice than as an exception to his eating disorder, but he’s decided to believe that his willingness to eat the occasional piece of toffee as a sign that he’s gotten much better.

All in all, he’s a great guy to have around. He’s friendly, helpful, and outgoing. He’s the kind of bloke who would offer to help you move house when everyone else has plans, or who would buy you a beer if your girl left you. He’s a sweet boy, really. All he wants is to be liked, if not by himself, than by others. He seems to be doing alright so far, but he knows that sooner or later he’s going to have to bite the bullet and accept what he sees in the mirror, or else accept the fact that he’ll never really be happy with himself as he is. His job helps a lot, since it makes him feel that he’s doing something really worth while, and Rose makes him ridiculously happy, but he still manages to keep a twinge of discontent.


HISTORY

Micah has almost no magic in his background (his da is a muggle and his mum is a muggle born), so he was raised very much with a foot in each world. In a lot of ways, he’s more muggle oriented than most muggle borns, since his mum always liked to go on about “appreciating muggle technology as a unique and worthy venture” rather than “becoming reliant on magic alone to solve all your problems.” She hadn’t had a great time during the war, so she always felt that it was extra important for all of her children to appreciate their muggle-ness and not feel lesser because of it.

Of course, when Micah’s older sister failed to get a Hogwarts letter, everyone just figured that was it. Kate, Micah, and David had been told their whole lives that they were special and perfect just as they were, so they weren’t too eaten up about being non-magical. However, when Micah got his letter, the tone of the siblings’ relationship changed. Somehow, it had been okay when everyone assumed that they would all be muggles together, but now Micah had gone and messed it all up. How could Kate be expected to believe that she was special when her not particularly brilliant brother had been chosen over her to attend a school for wizardry? And what of David? Would he go off and leave Kate in the dust too, or would he also be stuck in Micah’s big stupid shadow? The entire family dynamic (which had
always been sitcom-perfect in the past) became tense and uneasy. Of course, Laura and Robert did their best to mediate, but there was little success. Kate was bitter for years. Micah, of course, didn’t do well under the silent treatment. He was certain that he had personally done something awful, but he had no idea how to fix it. He briefly suggested to his parents that his letter was some kind of mistake or joke, but they refused to let him renounce his wizardry.

He was entirely unsure that he was cut out for this whole magic thing for a while, but his first few nights at Hogwarts did wonders to change his mind. First, there was the food. His mum cooked with magic, but not like this. Second, there was the library. Though he wasn’t particularly keen on studying, it was a relaxing place to be, and it smelled right. Third, there was Rose. She was a second year in his house when he arrived, and she was the first person he really got close to. She was brilliant and funny, and she was just as perfect for him as the library. She was comfortable and safe, and her hair smelled like books. To be honest, Rose was his first best friend.

Over the summer between his second and third years, David got his Hogwarts letter and Kate got brutal with her remarks. She was a sharp tac and she could read people well, so her jibes always cut more than they had any right. She called him names, questioned his sexuality, and taunted him for his looks. She made big remarks about what a funny looking kid he was, and how lucky he was to be a swish, because he’d never get a girl looking like that. She called him porky (which he was) and spot-faced (which he was) and clumsy (which he was). For a kid with an already low self-esteem, it was a lot to handle. That was the summer that he started his first fit of self-improvement. He had never been very mentally stable when it came to how he looked, but Kate pushed him past any point he could hope to return from unscathed.

When he got back to Hogwarts, he found that he could no longer list the food at the top of his list favourite things. Rose and the library tied for first, and for a while, they were all that made him feel that he belonged. Rose had always been good like that, though. She made him feel worthy of taking up space. She listened. She was just... Rose. It took Micah a while to realize how much he liked her, but as soon as he realized it, it was suddenly obvious. It was just a fact he’d always known. In his sixth year, he did it. They were talking like always, and he kissed her. And she kissed back. And that was the start.

She inspired him, really. He had always been an aimless student, more concerned with whether people liked him than whether he would make it in the real world after school. She anchored him and encouraged him to try harder and do better. She was almost entirely responsible for all the Os and Es on his transcript after NEWTs. She encouraged him to go in for the nursing program (which he desperately wanted, but was scared to do for fear of epic failure), and she was there when he was tired and irritable before final exams.

For him, Rose has been the only constant. She’s his rock, and he wants nothing more than to see her smile everday.

MISC.

How does your character feel about Wiztech? He has telly. In his flat. In wizarding London. He has wizard telly. What could be cooler?

What are three things you would like to do with your character over the course of the game?
- I’d like to see him find someone to really open up to in a way he can’t do with Rose. He loves her more than anything, but giving her cause worry makes him feel like he’s about to break out in hives. What he really needs is someone he can trust, but won’t feel too awful about making worry. So far, he’s never found anyone like that.
- Micah has always been meant to be a dad. He loves kids, and he’s the kindest man to ever walk the earth. I don’t expect him and Rose to start having babies any time soon, but I don’t think he’s ever mentioned how much he wants a family to her, and he’s beginning to realize that they’re reaching a point in their relationship where it might be prudent to do so.
- He’d like to go further with his relationship with Rose, but he’s worried that he might not be ready. He knows he doesn’t ever want to live without her, but he’s afraid that somehow making the ‘forever’ bit official might jinx it. But he’s going to do his best to get over that silly notion. Bravery, Grey-Madley! Bravery!
